    • Cheung Chau Crazy Bike Puncture Woman at large
Today, took my wife's bicycle to repair place, after the second mysterious puncture in the space of a few weeks. She had left her bike near the Praya, while heading for work; came back to find the front tyre completely flat.Bicycle Repair Man (a top man, works near King's Cafe) saw the flat tyre, and immediately told me it must be a "nervous" woman who has evidently started a habit of puncturing tyres of bikes left near the ferry pier. He had another eight or so bikes awaiting puncture repairs; told me if I checked near the pier, could see many bikes with flat tyres. With inner tube removed, there too was typical hole he'd been finding: small, as if by something sharp and round like a needle. One bike awaiting puncture repair belonged to a woman who had seen Crazy Bike Puncture Woman in act of stabbing her tyre - but not in time to catch her.Evidently, the puncture habit started around Chinese New Year. No fixed time of day for puncturing. So, if you have a bike on Cheung Chau, take care - and keep an eye out for Crazy Bike Puncture Woman!

    • Criminal psychos roaming Cheung Chau!
If you've been on Cheung Chau recently, you'll have noticed several men whose shirts proclaim each to be an out-patient of Alcatraz Psychiatric Ward.
Now as you may have realised, this is a worrying development, as Alcatraz - aka "The Rock" - is the name of an island in San Francisco, which was the site of a jail for top security prisoners.

Quite how our little isiand has become home to so many patients from the psycho ward, I'm not sure; gotta wonder if some are on the lam, and whether the authorities know they are around.
CheungChauHK has investigated, and managed to grab this shot of one of the out-patient psychos. We advise caution in approaching this or other individuals bearing attire from Alcatraz.

    • Cycle park folly en route to Sai Wan
Every so often, I come across some kind of man-made structure, and wonder, "What were they thinking?!"On Cheung Chau, one of the best examples is this bicycle parking area which is located ... err, nowhere really.Well, it is somewhere of course - along the waterfront road between Sai Wan and the main village. But it's not convenient for either.I'm yet to see a cycle parked there; even tho see bikes parked below houses very close by.Do you ever use this cycle park - or know anyone who does?Better still: do you happen to be the person who planned this cycle park? If you are, perhaps you could indeed explain what you were thinking.

    • Graffiti ruining natural beauty of Cheung Chau
A couple of days ago, I met Dr Young Ng of the Association for Geoconservation on Cheung Chau. He and a couple of colleagues had been checking graffiti on rocks around the coast, such as Reclining Rock above Po Yue Wan (near Cheung Po-tsai Cave), and Vase Rock (Fa Peng Shek). I later sent him some contacts for Cheung Chau; he replied with following email:
My last time in Cheung Chau was a few years ago. However, the visit today terrifies me because the graffiti problem is much more serious than I expect. It is as infectious as H1N1.Some actions must be taken as soon as possible to stop the spread of this disease which will ruin the natural beauty of Cheung Chau. From the geologist's perspective, the rock features are great in recording  the weathering processes of granite and are definitely a unique identity of Cheung Chau. When we talk about "sense of place", apart from the distinctive culture of Cheung Chau, these rock features are valuable natural landmarks and identity of the island.  It is sad to see the lowering of these values because of graffiti. What have in my mind include: (1) organizing regular rock cleaning activities by our "Rock Cleaning Angels" (RCA) which will involve students and young people; (2) proposing some control measures and educational programmes for visitors and hikers; (3) proposing setting up of a local team of  RCA with the involvement of local residents esp. young people. To facilitate these, we may need to work together with local residents, district office and councillors. Thanks for suggesting the contacts. We will get in touch with them as soon as we could.

    • Holiday villas- the Rockies
This website brought back a lot of my childhood memories.  I used to spend my summer vacation at the old retreat house on the top of Peak Road.  It is now occupied by the Seascape Peninsula.  In the old days, that very spot stood a single story brick building where we spent one week each summer having the best time of our life.  A little secret here was that there were numerous haunted stories that came with that house but it was all part of the fun back then. Also, the photos posted in this website were superb.  What a great photographer!  I applaud your efforts in maintaining this site.

    • Lightning affects PCCW Broadband service on Cheung Chau?
I find lightning - even near Hong Kong - can affect my PCCW broadband connection: internet connection may halt for a few seconds, Now TV programmes freeze; perhaps happens several times within space of a few minutes, making broadband service real hard to use at such times. (though when storms are over or extremely close to Cheung Chau, I unplug my computer, to guard against lightning sending surges down lines, perhaps frying sensitive components.) Problems recurred with recent thunderstorms.Had some correspondence with PCCW about this. Including this email I sent PCCW last Nov:I emailed some time ago about our broadband connection becoming poor - often disconnecting - when there is lightning in and around Hong Kong (not just over Cheung Chau, where we live).A couple of guys came, changed external wiring - saying this should help, tho I couldn't understand how lightning several km from Cheung Chau could affect wiring to my house; instead, I figure it could be to do with connections leading to Cheung Chau. (Indeed, someone from netvigator told me that pccw netvigator perhaps had plans to increase number of exchanges leading to Cheung Chau, which should help solve the problem.)With storms this afternoon, also had major connection problems - as lightning over Cheung Chau, as well as nearby. Here's map from HK Obs websites, showing lightning during period this afternoon when connections very poor: most lightning was not over Cheung Chau; much was several km away.- in reply to which I received:With regards to your message, we are sorry to learn of your situation. Please be inform that usually the lightning will affect the stability of electric supply, so that it may affect the local server. We suggest that you may provide the error message when you experience difficult on internet connection.Talked to another resident who has similar problems. But, I'm not sure if an island-wide issue.

    • Moving to Cheung Chau (I hope!)
Hello there, my name is Hannah and I am hopefully going to be moving to Seascape peninsula on CC at the beginning of July. I have a few questions about the island for those of you who know it a little better! Firstly, are there many mosquitoes? I currently live in Guangzhou where the mosquito problem is horrid, but I am not sure what it's like in the outlying islands of HK. What about other flora and fauna? I enjoy nature and wildlife, but is there anything you have to watch out for that is poisonous? Lastly, how do storms affect life there, what with the ferry being the only transport option?I am really looking forward to the move and I hope it all goes smoothly, it seems like a really wonderful place to live.Hannah Laughing

    • Neglected Shell family trail signs
Just sent this to Shell customer service:
Some years ago, signs went up on Cheung Chau, marking family trail. These signs since neglected - seemed no one cared about the trail. Some have gone I think, others defaced or illegible through ravages of time. Now, maybe best if Shell could pay to remove the signs (or, maybe too optimistic of me, replace them - and ensure there's some maintenance).shell family trail sign cheung chau

    • Never ending drainage works
Though I'd known of major drainage works projectfor Cheung Chau, hadn't expected it to go on so long - seems an eternity since holes etc dug at the top of Peak Road and beside Pak Tei Temple. Yet, work still ongoing. Photos here from the top of Peak Road (by junction with Sports Ground road) this morning.

Quick google for info, and I find questions were asked about the drainage works in Islands District Board meeting on 23 October last year:

Mr. John BINKS, Chief Engineer, Hong Kong Island and Islands Development Office, Civil Engineering and Development Department (CED) and Mr. LEE Kwok-cheung, Director of Ho Tin & Associates, Consulting Engineers Limited responded.Mr. John BINKS said that CED was very concerned about issues that affected the livelihood of the residents of Chau. The captioned works belonged to part of Works No.IS 13/04. The progress of the drainage works tied in with the latest works schedule as stipulated by the contractor. Unless unforeseen circumstances arose, it was expected that drainage works could be completed in August 2007. ..Another Member expressed that he hoped that the works could be completed in August 2007 as scheduled. The daily life of the residents and the business of the shops had been seriously affected. One of the sites in front of Pak She Elderly Home posed a danger to the elderly. Some of the sites did not have sufficient flashing lights and the fences often fell down....Another Member opined that the fact that the Government had put a lot of resources in improving the drainage system of Cheung Chau was a piece of good news for the residents of Cheung Chau. Slow progress of the works, insufficient manpower at the site and wrong location for carrying out works were problems that had been often discussed at the meetings of the District Management Committee. He learned from the residents that improvement had been made recently....
