Black-naped Oriole at Sai Wan
Late yesterday afternoon, I went to Sai Wan (southwest Cheung Chau) area to take photos. Heard a Black-naped Oriole calling and singing - albeit song half-hearted, in the wooded compound just south of the village.
Song is flutey whistles; one of the calls is also a flutey whistle - but another call sounds like a cat being strangled (not that I've actually heard such a thing!). A gorgeous bird - larger than a bulbul, mostly brilliant yellow with a black stripe running through the eyes and around the back of the neck (nape); but tends to lurk in tree canopy. Scarce breeding bird in Hong Kong, at only a few sites. I've heard/seen oriole in this compound in a previous spring, and suspected it may breed here - perhaps likes the open woodland.
