Forest Wagtail at Siu Kwai Wan
There's a Forest Wagtail just outside our place.
I almost overlooked it this morning - got up late after a night watching cricket (yes, soccer's not the only sport with a World Cup), and my missus Maya pointed out a wagtail on the path just outside. I've seen White Wagtails around here before, and figured that would be the species; didn't see the bird tho.
A bit later, heard call and realised it was a Forest Wagtail - an uncommon passage migrant in Hong Kong, which I've seen only once before on Cheung Chau.
Luckily, it has stayed around, and just had a good look at it on path below small banana grove: it had caught a small green caterpillar, which will help a little as it refuels before continuing its northward migration, maybe to northeast China.
As the name suggests, this is a forest bird; has some green on upperparts for camouflage. While normal wagtails wag tails up and down, this species is novel as it has habit of pivoting from side to side, so it does the twist as it walks, or even when perching.
Here's a photo I've taken of a Forest Wagtail - nesting at Beidaihe, east China.
