Morning fog, lychee bugs, and mapwing

kwun yam fogA foggy start to the day! - typical of late March, when get warm humid air starting to push northwards, whilst still some cooler air from the north.

lychee bug

Few birds around se Cheung Chau; a couple of White-rumped Munias very close to the path, both looking scruffy - wonder if they'd been released in some barmy Buddhist/Taoist ceremony (barmy as releasing living creatures nowadays leads to much suffering, and usually death for creatures released).
Heard an Ashy Minivet - a migrant - over Fa Peng valley.

common mapwing

Lychee bugs are much in evidence. Belong tofamily known as shield bugs or stink bugs. Feed on sap (lychee trees especially in this case), and excude nasty smelly liquid if threatened. Fond of laying eggs on towels and other clothes left out to dry; "Usually 14 eggs" I was reently told by field biologist Graham Reels, who studied this species at Kadoorie Farm, but didn't find way to stop it being lychee tree pest there.

Far prettier - a Common Mapwing butterfly, landing briefly, flying, landing briefly again, on path just above our place.
