Terns from ferry and island

Po Toi produced excellent day's birding yesterday (sadly, not for me!) - and planned to head there today. But, with lots of rain, traffic too bad and taxis too few to make the ferry there in time.

So, I took ferry from Central back to Cheung Chau: slow ferry, so could watch for birds, whilst being sheltered from torrential rain showers as thunderstorms swept over. I saw terns from the ferry: one Bridled, seven White-winged, a Common or Aleutian, a Black-naped and, near Cheung Chau, for possible Roseate Terns. All had surely come inshore during the wet and rather windy weather with a trough of low pressure over coastal waters.

In the afternoon, the rain eased and mostly stopped. I went to Nam Tan, to watch for terns and maybe other seabirds. In 45 mins, saw 20 Black-naped, three White-winged and two Roseate terns - getting very good views, with a couple of parties following trawlers (trawler nets disturbing marine life, giving the terns chance to catch fish). Also two Bridled Terns passing well offshore.
I also checked the woods and wet areas in valleys of se Cheung Chau, but though there had been good numbers of little bitterns, and landbirds such as Arctic Warbler on Po Toi yesterday, didn't find even one passage migrant.
