Again walked southeast Cheung Chau this aft. No migrants in the trees, and all was v quiet till my son dithered, looking into concrete channel carrying small stream towards Kwun Yam Wan. I looked down too, thinking just leaves and water - and a Yellow Bittern flew up. I've only rarely seen this species on the island - maybe only once, in May 1989 when Typhoon Brenda resulted in an arrival of little bitterns and other herons. Normally favours marshes as at Mai Po, so this one was in less than ideal habitat, but probably only here for a day or so before moving further south.
